I Escaped The Titanic: The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912 For Kids Age 8-12 by SD BrownMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was an interesting but obviously, a very disturbing book aimed at 8 to 12 year-olds. As a reader well into my 7th decade, even I found it quite difficult to read without a shedding a small tear in several parts of the story. This was when the main character known as C J allowed his thoughts and feelings to drift into considerations for his family and his new friend, Meg. He is a 13 year-old and he first met Meg on board the Titanic. Their new friendship just seems to ‘click’ despite some objections from Meg’s straight-laced aunt. This book was well written by the author showing much understanding and empathy for the kids. When they are struggling on a lifeboat, towards the final section of the story, it is perhaps a little too stretching of the imagination but it works quite well. Young children reading this exciting but heart-breaking book will be totally absorbed in my opinion. I hope the details researched and shown after the tale ends will encourage young readers to go on and find out more in S.D. Brown’s ‘I Escaped’ series.
By coincidence in November 2024 I read Robert D. Ballard’s excellent account about ‘The Discovery of the Titanic’ and so was aware of some of the excellent facts and figures given in this novella. Brown’s book reminded me of many of the details I found there, and so it is not just for youngsters. Some of the older readers of this world may enjoy it also!
