My rating: 4 of 5 stars
“The Client” has become my favourite Grisham novel. I thought that “The Runaway Jury” was hard to beat as a gripping tale, full of intrigue, humour and twists, but I found “The Client” very hard to put down. I was completely gripped from the start when two young boys in a wood try to prevent a man’s suicide. Mark Sway, the elder brother, soon has the FBI following him and the mafia threatening him and his family. Reggie Love is his remarkably engaging lawyer and, between the two of them, Mark and Reggie have some of the best dialogue in the book.
The story moves at a rapid pace and contains just enough legal information to make the tale credible without introducing any tedium. Grisham does a great job of showing how Mark is old beyond his years, and how Reggie manages to stay ahead of the powerful authorities that want to “own” her young client.
I became a John Grisham fan relatively recently and have read many of his books but this must be amongst the best. This book was an exciting and delightful read, and for a pleasant change I did not want it to end. I saw the film long ago and found that I could not avoid picturing Susan Sarandon as her character, Reggie Love, as I read the book. This did not harm my enjoyment at all and even though I half expected the end I still found it thrilling and fulfilling. A thoroughly entertaining and satisfying read.
