The Hedgehogs Are Back! At the start of Autumn 2013 I wrote about “our” hedgehogs. First of all there was the pleasant discovery that we had a hedgehog that may be preparing to use our DIY hoghouse for its hibernation. Secondly, there was the surprise to find it feeding alongside a fox! And then we had two more delightful surprises when a second and a third hedgehog joined the first one for a regular meal each night. I had already made a second hoghouse but had to consider constructing a third. Time ran out and I didn’t make another in the end. So, imagine how pleased we were to see all three hedgehogs return to the patio to feed, just as early Spring arrived! They did not make an appearance all together. First one came to feed, then the second a couple of nights later, and the third the next night. Often they were feeding at different times, between about 7pm to midnight over three or four nights. One large hedgehog in particular was obviously eager to make more baby hedgehogs and continually snuffled around the other two, even pushing them about while they carried on eating all of the time – completely ignoring his advances! Then, after about four or five days, we had a fourth hedgehog arrive – a fourth hedgehog! – we could not believe our eyes. This one attracted the interest of the “fruity” one but we’re still not sure which are males and which are female. It also raises more questions: Are they co-habiting in pairs in the two hoghouses? Or do I need to get busy and construct two more hoghouses ready for the Winter of 2014? PS. By the way in answer to all those readers of the Blog, curious about making a hedgehog house for their own garden, I intend to post a blog with instructions for How To Make A Hoghouse in the near future.
