My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A simple, straight forward story for children about 4 to 6 years and that has a poetry competition for Maddie and her friends. There is an opportunity for the reader to get involved with completing the missing words to a rhyme on the same theme of Father’s Day. This could be a very interesting if the adult reading it with the child is either of their parents. Cute pictures and cute words throughout that will appeal to the very young, encouraging them to read more. The second half of the book is full of helpful references and tips for parents when helping their child to read – a very good resource for most I would imagine. But as a retired educator of older students I’m not sure about offering all of this information to “laymen/parents”. However, speaking as a grandad I found the earlier section a lot of fun to share with the kids. It will be for teachers of primary children to comment better about the later section. Finally, perhaps there could have been more offered for the child to experiment with using the rhyming theme.
