My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Although The Ring of Carnac is book 2 in the Tales of Gaspar series I found I was able to follow the story quite well, not having read book 1, The Road of Nyn. It is unfortunate that the fantasy adventure tale contained between the covers is one based around the search for a ring, as one of the two best fantasy stories ever, in the opinion of many, including myself, is that written of course by J.R.R. Tolkein. Comparisons between them as one reads are difficult to avoid. However, Michaud’s book is aimed at a younger group of readers, I would say around the age of 9 to 11, when, hopefully, they would be unlikely to have read either The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings.
Adventure and danger, fellowship among the travellers, a fast moving plot and twists and turns along the way are all ingredients for success in the recipe for a children’s story and The Ring of Carnac has them all. Humorous dialogue and intrigue are also to be found here which will capture the attention of any child and persuade them to keep turning the pages. When you include wizards, goblins and sword fights as well - what is not to like? This is a well written book from the beginning to the end of the journey taken by Kay and Jerra, the two main characters, although my favourite character was the mischievous Felix. Recommended to all lovers of fantasy adventure stories.
