My rating: 5 of 5 stars
As I often find with Dickens' novels this was a difficult read in parts, due no doubt to the rather archaic literary language of the times; but it was completely absorbing throughout. Although I knew most of the characters before I met them along the way, thanks to the many films, stage and TV productions, nevertheless, I found it was a real pleasure to have this genius author put some 'meat on their bones' in his own inimitable way. I was even pleasantly surprised to experience the occasional tear, smile or knowing nod of the head when reading some of the events or actions displayed on the page before me.
I had forgotten just how long this epic novel was, but what a sense of achievement and satisfaction at the end. Well worth the effort! Now I can commence reading another Dickens' novel, about which I know absolutely nothing - Dombey and Son.
