My rating: 4 of 5 stars
There's no need to go on too much about a Wallander book as it's all been said before I suppose! Brilliant beginning, intriguing plot and fascinating characters throughout - including a very moody and gloomy Wallander. This was quite understandable as he has just had a very satisfying holiday with his father and the detective feels as though they "connected" well for a change. But his father dies shortly afterwards.
My main criticism would be the enormous number of very short and clipped sentences. This could be because of failings in the translation, which came from a different person to the earlier books I've read. Or it could be deliberate on the part of Henning Mankell, I suppose. Either way I missed the "colour", emotion and attitude that the occasional adjective or adverb can often bring to a sentence.
